Parliament Hill Mounties getting submachine guns

OTTAWA — Mounties responsible for protecting Parliament Hill are being issued submachine guns.

The RCMP officers will be equipped with the Heckler and Koch MP5 submachine gun.

But the RCMP says officers will still rely on their semi-automatic nine millimetre pistols as their primary weapon.

The machine guns will be a ``secondary weapon'' left in cruisers.

RCMP assistant commissioner Pat McDonell says the weapon will also be issued to officers who keep watch over foreign embassies.

The RCMP have stepped up security on Parliament since a daylight protest last December by Greenpeace activists.

They used climbing gear and a ladder to reach the rooftops of the Centre and West Blocks where they unfurled banners taking aim at Ottawa's stance on climate change. (Toronto Star)
